The bathroom fan, venting directly into the attic, exacerbated this problem by introducing more moisture. In addition, the soffits were obstructed by plywood, a common situation in 1960-1970 homes, hindering proper attic and roof ventilation and contributing to moisture accumulation. It’s essential to note that building standards and construction knowledge have evolved over time. What was considered acceptable in the 1960s may no longer be so today, due to advances in the understanding of sustainable construction, energy efficiency and indoor air quality.

Solution for attic insulation and ventilation:
To address these issues, a methodical approach was taken. First, an attic mold removal was carried out, eliminating all traces of mold and creating a healthy environment. The eaves were reinforced in terms of insulation to compensate for the lack of junction between the vapor barriers and increase the level of insulation at the bottom of the slope. The aluminum soffits were removed, and the wood obstructing their function was cut away, restoring attic and roof ventilation. New soffits were then installed to complete the roof ventilation. To ensure trouble-free evacuation of humidity from the bathroom, the ventilator was correctly relocated to the outside by installing a specialized flap on the roof. Finally, an additional layer of high-performance cellulose insulation was added to optimize the level of attic insulation to the highest standards.
